And just to make one point clear: I, Andreas Wiedow, support the #stopkony, KONY 2012 and Invisible Children movement. This blog is for you to make a more informed decision and will be updated . Be that pro or contra. All is fine . . .
Yesterday I came across the name Joseph Kony for the first time and used my monthly BlackStar massmail on ecademy.com to inform my entire network there for this blog . . . KONY 2012 . . . which has since attracted plenty of informed and interesting comments. Comments that gave me even more drive to dig deeper.
If you come across this today for the first time you may make a decision based on your guts and after watching the LOOONG video only. You may make a decision based on 10, 100 or 1000+ aspects . . . up to you. I made a decision and got a gut feeling after just a couple of seconds watching this . . .
I know I am asking for much – 29:59 minutes watching – be sure you have the time in one go – you won’t regret it and know what to do after.

Let’s have a look at the most common counter arguments (most backed up with sources – if there’s some missing you’d be interested in, please ask in comments, thanks)
Cheat argument #1: Dubious Finances
Even if the initial screenshot/snippet sounds negative . . . it admits that around 30%+ go into the cause. And THAT alone gave me a good feeling. Because I know myriads of BIG charities where only 5 – 10% go into the main cause and the rest . . . ‚disappears‘.
So 30% is a GOOD share.
Nevertheless I did a little research . . .

KONY seems quick to change tactics and appears to make every move needed to get away. My personal opinion in this regard. Do it as I did it in Risk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk_(game)) and gather arms around those you want to weed out. Later you may have a closer look at the other (pre-checked) arms in play. Makes sense ? Besides that it is already reported that those parts of the Ugandan Army who are supported by about 100 special US forces haven’t been reported ANY illegal behavior since. Also that could be a good start, don’t you think ?

It is good to see all sides of the issue. I’m not sure how I feel about the organization behind it, but I am sure I feel today as I did years ago when I first heard his name and of his atrocities that he needs to be hunted down and held accountable. If it takes this, so be it. Still, I find the organization a bit shady.

Thanks for the information although I find your commentary a bit disjointed but that may be just a language issue. For me the main issue is let’s not shoot the messenger for bringing the bad news. In fact I didn’t find it bad at all. Positive things are happening because of the actions of many to bring this issue to the forefront. The social media campaign has heighten our collective awareness of Kony and his atrocities and his crimes against humanity. The media beat up over the small negative reaction to this campaign and its organisers is unfortunate for what I think is a positive use of social media in awareness raising. Thanks

When you click the first link to my blog on ecademy you see that it was purely positive and attracted critique that I felt needed to be addressed too. The last sentance of this excellent blog says it all about the Joseph Kony movement. Is Kony 2012 best at „sensitizing the world for more informed decisions?“
Whether the Kony 2012 movement is based on solid truth or is a huge worldwide scam is a question every person who considers getting involved needs to ask themselves before taking any action. It’s so easy in the modern Internet Age to get swept away by intense emotion and the human desire to belong to something which is perceived to be worthwhile and good. In fact, it’s such an appealing emotion that normal concerns and questions might be easily and completely swept away.
Regardless of whether the Kony 2012 is a worthwhile movement or not needs to be personally questioned by anyone who ultimately decides to donate time, money or their professional endorsement of the movement. Ultimately the decision to support Kony 2012 should be evaluated by everyone before taking any type of action.
Of course this should be true about any type of charity, grass-roots movement or similar type of event. As the Internet becomes more sophisticated these types of movements will continue to be presented to the world. It’s so important that we all learn to be clear about the realities behind them before deciding to support them or not.

I have mixed feelings about anything that gets this much hyped. I’m sure that the film takes a particular slant and exaggerates things in order motivate people to act. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t some truth to it.

I have viewed this video over the past few days. Emotions have been many: horrified, angry and sad. My gut take away is that this is not a scam and I go with my gut.
I think questioning whether anything is a scam nowadays is not a bad idea. There are so many very polished scams all around us.
My advice is go with your gut if your gut has proven reliable in the past. My instincts have saved me so many times and helped me to make the right choices.

I spent five years of my life in Tanzania engaged in the aid effort. I learned the hard way that there is no simple answer to the problems of Africa. Yet I must admit I was completely won over by the video and yes, I did watch it right through. Then when the counter-propaganda emerged, I began to use my head as well as my heart. Everything I have ever learnt tells me that you must use sources on the ground to identify the problems and deliver the solutions. I am not sure that KONY12 fully does that. Also I am concerned about launching guerrilla attacks on a guerrilla group, most of whose forces are children. Inevitably, lots of children will be killed. Sorry, but I today I would not contribute to it.

I also agree that you must use sources on the ground. And the sources on the ground need support to keep up the good work and make a considerate decision to keep blood shed at lowest possible levels ?

My personal opinion is that if people want to donate money to any cause, they should always look at the causes that are available in their home country. Try to help your own people, stop trying to save the world. If you cannot save your own people, then how can you expect to save the world? Every country has their own people that need help, so help them, don’t just ignore the problems at your doorstep so that you can look good helping a cause that is half a world away.

I absolutely agree that donating and contributing starts . . . with yourself and in your family. Goes over the neighborhood and may be limited in your country. For me, would rather take pleasure on their behalf because they have ‚made it“ to the top, exposed a horrific behaviour to the bright light of international awareness and created actionable results.

I am a supporter of the Invisible Children movement and shared the video on a few ways and on my website. But I admit it made me think were all the money came from to pay for the gifts to the supporters.
Anyway. I don’t think a scam/profit organisation would bring up so much endurance to set up this movement. The perfect manner in which everything has been planed and implemented is breath taking. As far as I know such success as never been achieved before with a movement on a global scale.
I like it to see that Africa and the abused children get the attention they deserved since long. But I am very much aware that this example shows how social media could be missused nowadays as never seen before.
It will become more difficult for the public to sort out the real underlying cause of a „social“ movement in the very near future. I’m sure we will see real foul play and scam actions to mislead a global audience from now on. The methods of public relation for political reasons are not the same anymore.
That’s why I greatly appreciate Andreas’s appeal to prudence against such movement makers. I don’t think the Invisible Childrens Movement ist a scam. But we need a new awareness for the waste possibilities of social media, be it for the good or the bad.

How much effort has gone into this post simply humbles me. I am extremely disappointed that I clicked the button to take the eaves on the mission to read and share this. Africa has had its problems and thanks to scams like this the problems continue.
What can i do ? At the moment I do not have enough money to contribute to those lovely children nor the influence to try and impress upon someone to take action but but i can spread the word around and gather more people. The internet makes us all one family. A family of human beings behaving as humans should. The point is by spreading the news we can help people know whose the genuine ones and who are the fraudsters in the world.
I have watched the video and it left a mark in me. I do spread some social awareness in my community try to bring people above caste lines and all and I know the pain. Thanks a ton for sharing this post. Incredible work this Andreas – you are truly a beautiful person. 🙂

I was very moved by the video myself and yes I posted it because I wanted people to be aware of Kony. Now, I personally did more research myself on the group and decided not to donate to them, but to others who bring more direct aid without taking 30 percent for administrative costs.
Rotary International drills water wells in Africa and educates villagers to safe water. They I support.
I do not feel that bringing Kony’s awareness to more of the world is bad, but there are more to bring to the world’s attention, Syria comes to mind right now. Should we make video’s and show more of the bloodshed in Homs?
This is a complex subject but each person must make their own donation decision, but as adults, we all should do our research and for that I thank you for a well-documented article.

I feel SoMe is just about to take off and many institutionalized don’t know yet what’s happening. KONY2012 as it happens is just the best the film makers could do right now as they have been in Uganda and not in Syria. Maybe Syria next by somebody else ?

Thanks for the great post…It is plain and simple that you cannot feed steak to a vegetarian ! The importants of this mission will be recognized by those that are willing to make a difference.There will always be those that allow fear to lead them astray but that is up to them.I may have missed the part where there was any intent for harm…what I do recall is for the recognition of what is occuring and that making it known IS the best way to STOP it. It is to be expected that such a mission will become debatable…afterall…darkness does not like the light ! I eppreciate the effort you have put into research.So far I have seen people post that the only 30%,32% and 37% goes to the cause.To me that is not the point.The point, to me, is that there is a wrong being done and we must recognize it ! For those that scoff at the percent going towards those employed my Invisible Children and to production costs,I say „Do you work for free ?“and „when you work,is it just for money or for a good cause as well ?“…

I think that the idea of stopping Kony is an admirable cause to get behind, but I find it difficult to fully support the way that Invisible Children are doing it. Making videos are a great way to get people informed and that is what Invisible Children have done, I probably would not have heard of Kony if it weren’t for that video being sent to me as many times as it was. Unfortunately I believe that Invisible Children are just trying to make movies, rather than actively trying to help people.

I have to say that I cannot think of such a similar subject go viral so quickly. The good news is that we live in a democracy and one of the key elements to a democracy is CHOICE.
It appears to me that so many people have made their decision based on very little information and much of the „information“ biased one way or the other.
My jury is still out. This could be an international disgrace OR there could be positive aspects to the story …… I find myself unable to make a finite decision. O would need more FACTS ……and because of the nature of this story I am fairly sure we will get those very shortly.

To be honest I had never heard of them before reading this blog, so would not have donated…I give to animal charities mainly. Having worked in alot of African countries over the last 20 years I have donated lots to local charities I supported when I was working there. that way I know the money / goods actually get to where they aremeant to be going.

There are Literally millions of children in the World in Serious need . I am Alway Going to Help but I do it Through Charities i Trust and People I Know . I Have a Niece going to Africa this Summer , A school Teacher , to Help Educate and feed children . I know She Will Accomplish what she can and ALL the Money Given to Her will be used for that Cause . i support Catholic charities and Never Buy the big Pitch stuff on the Internet . why Risk ?

Thank you for the great post! It looks like you did a way better research than Mashable did when they posted their provocatively titled article (guess you saw it).
As for me, I am very sensitive and emotional when it comes to children. It doesn’t matter to me in what part of the world issues happen or what kind of organizations are involved and everything like this. My strong belief is that children shouldn’t be hurt in any way anywhere. That’s why I support Kony2012 campaign. I can talk more about it but I will just quote the best response to Kony2012 critics I’ve seen:
„Invisible Children is not just about Uganda. It is about opening our eyes to other parts of the world. It is about being the change. It is about getting involved. It is about holding governments accountable. Find your passion. Do more. Be more. And frankly, f@&k the critics.“

Having watched KONY 2012 Invisible Children’s Promotional video, read the majority of links especially Kony 2012: what’s the real story? | Politics | guardian.co.uk http://bit.ly/yfxC24 I am inclined to agree that the hype is out of date and irrelevant in respect of the capture of this man. If they had wanted to, he would have been caught years ago.
As those on the ground have suggested the Ugandan Govt. has been as agressive and barbarous and perhaps continues to be so.
One person pointed out Uganda is now in a Post Conflict state as Kony is no longer in the North.
For me the most interesting, is the fact that US Special forces were deployed in Oct. 2011 under the guise of support to the Ugandan armies efforts to capture Joseph Kony. I believe the real objective is, as in Libya, to secure the oil exploration in the region.
On a lighter note Invisible Children has clearly done some good work on the ground and continues to do so. Let us hope that the money received by this hugely successful campaign does indeed go to where it is needed. Time will tell. Really excellent journalistic work. Danke J

Very comprehensive. I think the one thing that I keep coming back to is that there aren’t too many people refuting that Kony has savagely killed people. Nor are many refuting that he is forcing children to kill. Most of the complaints seem to be centered around the fact that he’s mostly left Uganda, and that they children are visible (which I think is taking the name to literally or missing the point intentionally). The point of the name is that for the average person not in Africa, the children might as well not exist, not that they children are invisible to everyone. People are also interested in keeping the peace in Uganda, even if he still operates there a little. The problem is, whether or not he’s there, he WAS there and was forcing children into combat (which few refute). Is it ok to just dismiss these items and let him go just because he’s decided to move? That’d be like saying Oh – Osama Bin Laden isn’t in Afghanistan anymore, I guess his atrocities don’t matter. No, we went into Pakistan and got him because it doesn’t matter where he went, his past actions were awful and needed to be dealt with. But forget about that.
Let’s look at the most important fact:
The President of the United States committed troops to support this. The President isn’t just going to dial up the military and deploy troops without having something THOROUGHLY researched. Think about that for a second. This is a person with the best intelligence in the world at his disposal. If Kony were just a money grab for Invisible Children, do you think the President is going to fall for it without some investigation?
That’s really where the argument begins and ends with me.

The charity is a lobbying group to raise awareness, the money hitting the ground in Africa is only part of it. Funding the awareness campaign to cause action by politicians is just as important.

I read an aricle in Spain’s El Pais yesterday that uncovered much of the same muck. Kony is undoubtedly a criminal but it’s pathetic (and very common amongst charities) that people make money out of apparent crusades!
